I set out on a journey of a thousand leagues, packing no provisions.
I leaned on the staff of an ancient who, it is said,
entered into nothingness under the midnight moon.
It was the first year of Jokyo, autumn, the eighth moon.

is the old name of a mountain in Nagano prefecture,
now called Kamurikiyama 冠着山. It is 547 meters high.

Ubasuteyama (姨捨山) is the common name of Kamurikiyama (冠着山), a mountain in Chikuma, Nagano, Japan.

as souvenirs for those

The chestnuts of Kiso were famous. The poor farmers used to prepare the horse chestnuts in a way to make mochi ricecakes out of them to have some food in the winter months. This was also a souvenir at the time of Basho.

曽良が「おくのほそ道」の旅で用いた笈 The OI used by Sora during the trip to "Oku no Hosomichi".

The OI was made of a wooden frame with a bamboo box to keep the luggage.

oi of a yamabushi 　笈
A square wooden box with four legs carried as a backpack by mountain ascetic priests (yamabushi 山伏).
The interior of the box is divided into upper and lower compartments, the upper having a double leaf hinged door and the lower a vertical halved door called a kendonbuta 倹飩蓋.
The monk used the box to transport his clothes and food in the upper part and his ritual tools and images in the lower, and the oi is therefore of considerable significance as a Buddhist object. The surface of the box may be decorated with engravings or with a gilt bronze sheet decorated with stupas, lotus flowers or wheels.

which starts out with a self declaration by Basho,

‘In my body, which has one hundred bones and nine openings, exists something I have called Furabo.
I must have meant that my body resembles spun silk

This passage was inspired by this passage in the Zhuangzi,
‘The hundred joints, the nine openings, the six organs, all come together and exist here (as my body) . . . it would seem there must be some True Lord among them.
But whether I succeed in discovering his identity or not, it neither adds nor detracts from his Truth.’”

He was about to embark on a long journey, and he surmises that people will remember him as a traveler.




MAYUZUMI:
This comes from the opening section of a travel diary, known as
Oi no kobumi, The Records of a Travel-Worn Satchel.

YASUDA:
What’s interesting about this drawing is that to the right of his verse are four lines of text, accompanied by a variety of symbols, which denote melody and rhythm—in other words, how the words should be sung as part of a te melody and rhythm—in other words, how the words should be sung as part of a noh play.
This text, again, includes the word “traveler” and is an excerpt from a noh play called Umegae.
. . . Composing a haiku—or any other kind of verse, in fact—is called utau in Japanese, which also means to sing or chant. In that sense, Basho’s haiku were probably meant to be sung, not just read or recited. It might be interesting to see how it might have been performed.
. . . MAYUZUMI:
When Basho wrote Oi no kobumi,
I’m sure his verses were sung in this way. In his Narrow Road, he writes that in Nasuno (now in Tochigi Prefecture), the sky suddenly turned dark, followed by a downpour, and he had to ask a local farmer to put him up for the night. . . .

chestnuts from Kiso
as souvenirs for those
of the floating world . . .

The chestnuts of Kiso were famous. The poor farmers used to prepare the horse chestnuts in a way to make mochi ricecakes out of them to have some food in the winter months. This was also a souvenir at the time of Basho.

He traveled with Basho for a while, even to Yoshino and Mount Koya. During these trips he used the name 南彦左衛門 and 野人 or 野仁.

Oi no Kobumi, or Records of Travel-worn Satchel
is a haiku journal of the trip Basho made in 1687, from October to April of the following year. He left Edo (Tokyo) for Iga Ueno, his hometown, where he stayed and enjoyed the New Year's celebration. He then traveled places near by, including Yoshino, Nara, Osaka, Suma, and Akashi.
