Journal of Bleached Bones in a Field
I set out on a journey of a thousand leagues, packing no provisions.
I leaned on the staff of an ancient who, it is said,
entered into nothingness under the midnight moon.
It was the first year of Jokyo, autumn, the eighth moon.
As I left my ramshackle hut by the river,
the sound of the wind was strangely cold.
Tr. Barnhill

That white skeleton
haunts my mind ... the autumn wind
penetrates my bones

A skeletion exposed in a field
Comes across my mind,
A piercing cold wind blows.

Vision of a sun bleached skull
In my mind, the body
Pierced by the wind.

- - - quoting Basho
I myself tried to fall asleep, supressing the surge of emotion from within, but my excitement was simply too great. I finally took out my notebook from my bag and read the poems given me by my friends at the time of my departure - Chinese poem by Sodo, a waka by Hara Anteki, haiku by Sampu and Dakushi (Jokushi 濁子 / 蜀子), all about the islands of Matsushima.
