Areas of Japan where hot water and steam are coming out of the ground are often called "hell" jigoku 地獄.
Some onsen villages even have a special deity to protect their area,
Jigoku Myoojin ”地獄明神”(Jigoku Myojin).

Issa often visited this hot spring near to his home, sometimes making it a long stay (tooji). He even wrote a "Hot Spring Diary" onsen no ki 温泉の記 in the year 文政５年 (1822).


貧しきものゝ子をやしなふには、湯のわく所にしくはあらじ。夜のほのぼの明て、烏の声と等しくがば（と）起て、十ばかりなる児の頭として、兄は弟を負ひ、姉は妹を抱きつゝ、素足にて門を出れば、それに引つゞきて迹からも其迹からも走り走りて、湯桁にとび入りつゝ、今玄冬素雪のころさへ丸裸にて狂ひ育ちにそだつ物から、おのづから病なく、ふとくたくましく見ゆ。さるから其親其親の衣着せる思ひもうすかるべし.
